The Air Force and Air Defense Museum

From the winter of 1972 until today, no opponent has ever shot down another B-52 bomber. Vietnam — the skies over Hanoi and the skies of northern Vietnam — remains the only place where a B-52 flying fortress was brought down and buried.
This proves that, even in the past, Vietnam possessed an advanced Air Defense – Air Force technology. Though it may not have had the most modern equipment, it was equipped with some of the most brilliant minds.
The Air Force and Air Defense Museum is now the place where the formation, development, battles, growth, and victories of the Vietnamese Air Defense – Air Force troops are preserved, displayed, and honored.
HISTORY
The Air Defense – Air Force Museum was originally the Traditional House of the Air Defense Command (established in 1958). In 1999, the museum was formed through the merger of two Category II museums: the Air Defense Museum and the Air Force Museum. In 2004, the museum was rebuilt at 173C Truong Chinh Street, Khuong Mai, Thanh Xuan, Hanoi, and was inaugurated on August 28, 2007.
SPACE
General
The museum is displayed according to the historical progression, with over 58,000 documents and artifacts spread over an area of 16,000m², divided into two main sections:
Outdoor Exhibition: With 102 large and unique exhibits, scientifically displayed over an area of more than 15,000m², it introduces four collections representing the four forces of the Air Defense – Air Force (PK-KQ): Anti-aircraft artillery, aircraft, radar, and missiles. These are the weapons, equipment, and specialized vehicles used by the PK-KQ troops, which have achieved outstanding accomplishments during the two wars against French colonialism and American imperialism, as well as in the national defense and construction of Vietnam today. Some of these machines were captured from the Saigon regime and were effectively used during the 1979-1989 war to protect the Southwest border.
Indoor Exhibition: The display area has two floors covering over 3,000m², featuring nearly 3,000 artifacts, images, and documents that outline the historical development of the PK-KQ forces, divided into 8 main topics and 4 fixed special topics:
- Topic I: The PK-KQ forces participate in the resistance against French colonialism (1946-1954).
- Topic II: The establishment and development of the Air Defense – Air Force forces (1954-1964).
- Topic III: The PK-KQ forces, along with the people of North Vietnam, defeat two American air raids on North Vietnam (1964-1972).
- Topic IV: The PK-KQ forces shooting down B-52 bombers and the victory of “Hanoi – Điện Biên Phủ in the Air” in December 1972.
- Topic V: The PK-KQ forces fighting in the integrated armed forces to liberate South Vietnam.
- Topic VI: The PK-KQ forces carrying out two strategic tasks of building and defending the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (1977-1999).
- Topic VII: Fixed special topics, which include four themes: Military-Civilian Unity – Strength from the Ground; International Solidarity; Friendly Cooperation within ASEAN; International Space Cooperation Flight.
- Topic VIII: The development of the revolutionary, regular, elite, and modern PK-KQ forces.
THE ARTIFACTS
The 37mm anti-aircraft gun that participated in the Dien Bien Phu campaign in 1954 has now become a national treasure…
According to documents from the Ministry of National Defense, this cannon was used by Battery 3, Company 827, Battalion 394, Regiment 367. This cannon is famous because it is associated with the act of sacrificing himself to save the cannon by Hero To Vinh Dien.
