The Air Defense – Air Force Museum was established on October 22, 1963. The museum is currently located at 171 Truong Chinh Street, Hanoi City. The predecessor of the Air Defense – Air Force Museum was the Air Defense Tradition Room established in 1958. In 2004, the museum was newly built, and on August 28, 2007, the Air Defense – Air Force Museum officially opened to the public.
The museum has a total exhibition area of 18,200m2 (of which, outdoor area: 15,000m2 and indoor area: 3,200m2). The Air Defense – Air Force Museum is ranked 2nd in the Vietnamese museum system. This is where images, documents, and artifacts are kept that demonstrate the process of birth, construction, fighting, growth, and victory of the Vietnam Air Defense – Air Force. (Minh Vượng, 2025)
The museum has thousands of valuable artifacts, images and documents, recreating the formation and combat process of the Air Defense – Air Force from its establishment to the present. In particular, the museum displays many important weapons and equipment such as MiG-21 and Su-22 fighter jets, UH-1 helicopters, SAM-2 missile systems, warning radars and anti-aircraft guns. One of the highlights is the wreckage of the B-52 aircraft shot down during the “Dien Bien Phu in the air” campaign in 1972. (Minh Vượng, 2025)
